KES 3–5 million is the sweet spot of the Japanese import market for Kenya. This is where the most popular family SUVs live — the Toyota Harrier Hybrid, Honda CR-V e:HEV, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5 — most in the 2019–2023 range with 20,000–50,000 km on the clock. It's also where the entry-luxury tier begins: BMW X1, Mercedes E-Class wagon, Audi A5 Sportback, Volvo XC40.
Duty in this band is driven by engine size as much as by value: a 2.0L hybrid and a 2.5L petrol at the same CIF price can sit in different excise bands. Ask for a duty quote on the specific unit before comparing against a local dealer.

Common Questions
KSh 3M – 5M — FAQ
Which is better in this budget: Toyota Harrier, Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester?
The Harrier is the most refined and holds its value best. The CR-V is practical and economical, especially as a hybrid. The Forester has standard all-wheel drive and is the better choice for rough roads. All three are in the live stock above, most with their auction sheet.
What is the best SUV to import for KES 3–5 million?
The Toyota Harrier Hybrid (2019–2021) at ~KES 3.2–3.9M CIF is consistently the best-value family SUV in this range. Alternatives with strong following: Honda CR-V e:HEV, Mazda CX-5 XD (diesel), Subaru Forester Advance, Nissan X-Trail e-4ORCE. KRA duty is assessed on KRA's CRSP for the model and year, not on CIF, and is quoted per vehicle.
Can I import a Land Cruiser Prado for under KES 5 million?
Rarely at this budget — a 2016–2017 Prado TX (2.7L or 2.8L diesel) with higher mileage may land around KES 4.7–5.3M. For a well-optioned late model Prado (2019+), budget from KES 5.5M CIF upward. If you want a Land Cruiser feel under KES 5M, consider a Prado 120-series (older-gen) or step to a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
Do hybrids pay less duty in Kenya?
Hybrids have historically been placed in a lower excise band than petrol equivalents of the same engine size, which can make a meaningful difference on a KES 4M CIF vehicle. The bands are set by the Finance Act and change, so confirm the current rate with us for the specific unit rather than assuming a saving.
Which cars in this budget have the strongest resale value in Kenya?
Toyota Harrier and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado are among the best for resale in Kenya, because demand and parts availability are constant. Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 also hold value well. European marques (BMW, Mercedes) tend to depreciate faster in Kenya because of parts and service costs. Condition and a documented history matter as much as the badge.
