How much does it cost to import a Japanese car to Kenya?
Two parts: the CIF Mombasa price we publish for every car, and KRA import duty, which we quote per vehicle.

The taxes stack, so a small change in CRSP moves the total more than you'd expect, and KRA revises both CRSP and excise bands without notice. That is why we don't publish a landed estimate. Ask us for an exact duty quote on any specific unit.
What is the best Japanese car to import to Kenya for a family?
For families, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Lexus LX, Toyota Alphard/Vellfire, and Nissan Elgrand are consistently popular imports due to their 7–8 seat capacity, reliability, and suitability for Kenyan roads. The Toyota Harrier and Lexus RX are excellent 5-seat family SUV options.
Are hybrid cars a good choice for import to Kenya?
Yes. Hybrid Japanese cars are increasingly popular in Kenya due to lower fuel costs. Models like the Toyota Harrier Hybrid, Lexus RX 450h, and Honda Vezel Hybrid offer significantly better fuel economy than their petrol equivalents. Hybrid batteries have proven durable in the Kenyan climate.
What year of Japanese car should I import to Kenya?
Kenya restricts imports to vehicles not older than 8 years from the year of manufacture. Importing in 2026, the oldest eligible model year is 2018. Newer vehicles attract lower excise duty and come with more modern safety features, so we recommend 2019 and newer for the best balance of price and specification.
How long does it take to import a car from Japan to Kenya?
Transit time from Japan to Mombasa is typically 30–45 days by sea. Auction processing takes 1–2 weeks before shipping, and KRA clearance plus inland transport 1–3 weeks after arrival. Total lead time from auction purchase to Nairobi delivery is typically 6–10 weeks.
